Behavior Technicians (BTs) work under the supervision of BCBAs and RBTs to provide ABA therapy services. This is a great entry point into the field if you're still working toward your RBT certification.

How to Become a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
RBT certification opens doors to a rewarding career helping individuals with autism. Here's your roadmap to becoming certified.
Complete 40-Hour Training
1-2 weeksTake an approved 40-hour training course covering ABA principles, ethics, and practical skills. Many courses are available online and free.
Pass Background Check
1-2 weeksSubmit to a criminal background check as required by the BACB. This ensures client safety and professional standards.
Complete Initial Competency Assessment
2-4 weeksWork with a qualified BCBA or BCaBA who will assess your skills using the RBT Task List and sign off on your competency.
Pass the RBT Exam
1 dayTake and pass the RBT certification exam administered by Pearson VUE. The exam is 85 multiple-choice questions.
Maintain Certification
OngoingComplete ongoing supervision requirements and renew your certification annually. Stay current with continuing education.
