Virginia enacted its autism insurance mandate in 2011 (HB 2467), requiring insurers to cover ABA therapy for individuals with autism spectrum disorder up to age 10, later expanded to no age limit in 2020. The state has a growing network of ABA providers, particularly in the Northern Virginia corridor (close to Washington, D.C.), the Hampton Roads area, and the Richmond metropolitan region. Virginia's strong military presence means many families access ABA services through TRICARE, which covers ABA therapy nationwide. Virginia Commonwealth University's Autism Center for Excellence (VCU-ACE) is a key state resource for autism services and training.

Insurance Coverage for ABA in Virginia

Virginia's autism insurance mandate (originally HB 2467, 2011; expanded 2020) requires state-regulated health insurance plans to cover ABA therapy for individuals with autism spectrum disorder with no age limit. Annual coverage limits have been progressively increased. Virginia Medicaid covers ABA therapy for eligible individuals.
