ABA Therapy in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania enacted its autism insurance mandate (Act 62) in 2008, requiring insurers to cover ABA therapy for children under 21 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. The state has a growing network of ABA providers concentrated in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, the Lehigh Valley, and the Pittsburgh region. Pennsylvania's Bureau of Autism Services, part of the Department of Human Services, coordinates state-level autism resources and supports. The state also offers the Adult Community Autism Program (ACAP) for adults with ASD, one of the few state-funded adult autism programs in the country.

Insurance Coverage for ABA in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's Act 62 (2008) requires state-regulated health insurance plans to cover the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder, including ABA therapy, for individuals under age 21. Coverage limits were set at $36,000 per year but have been adjusted over time. Pennsylvania Medicaid (Medical Assistance) covers ABA therapy without the dollar cap. Families with self-funded employer plans should check their specific coverage under federal parity laws.
