The state has seen significant growth in ABA providers, particularly in the Charlotte metropolitan area, the Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill), and the Triad region (Greensboro-Winston-Salem). The University of North Carolina's TEACCH Autism Program, based in Chapel Hill, is one of the oldest and most respected autism programs in the world and has influenced ABA practice nationwide. North Carolina Medicaid covers ABA therapy for eligible individuals of all ages.

Insurance Coverage for ABA in North Carolina

North Carolina's Collin's Law (SB 163, enacted 2015) requires state-regulated health insurance plans to cover ABA therapy for individuals under age 18 with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Coverage limits are set at $40,000 per year for children under 8 and $25,000 per year for children 8-18.
